The Sedona community deserves clarity about what happened to our high school tennis program.
When the Head Tennis Coach position became available, I stepped forward. I am a longtime tennis player, a parent, and a local small business owner who cares deeply about youth athletics. My candidacy was supported by the Principal, members of the local tennis community, and Assistant Coach Dr. Cathy Calogero, a retired Air Force Colonel and parent.
Ultimately, Athletic Director Mr. Brock hustled me, stringing me along whist I fulfilled all of the hiring requirements and then selected another candidate (away from the student and parents wishes) whose primary experience was in middle school teaching and soccer.
At the first official team meeting, the new coach arrived late and appeared unprepared to lead the program. Within a short time, two players left the team. Soon after, Sedona’s tennis program ceased operating.
This is not about attacking any one individual. It is about standards, leadership, and opportunity for our student-athletes.
Tennis in Sedona should reflect preparation, accountability, and commitment. Our students deserve coaches who are fit and ready to lead from day one.
As a community, we should ask:
How are coaching decisions made?
What qualifications are required?
What oversight exists to protect the integrity of our athletic programs?
Sedona deserves transparency. Our kids deserve better.
Update for those following:
Day 1 of Tennis Club took place this week. Two dedicated players showed up ready to play. Frank, Cathy, and I were also in attendance.
After warmups, the players chose to hit together while Frank and I played a short set. During that set, Frank experienced a leg injury and stepped off the court. Cathy advised rest to allow proper healing.
The players and parents then discussed next steps. The focus now is on rebuilding interest, encouraging participation, and giving the sport every chance to regain momentum.
At this point, the future of tennis in Sedona rests largely with student interest. The coaches and parents are committed to supporting the players and will regroup next week to evaluate where we stand.
We remain hopeful that more students will step forward and give tennis a chance.
